Every release also carries SHA256SUMS, the SHA-256 checksum of each package. The packages are not code-signed, so the checksum and the download from github.com over HTTPS are what vouch for them.
What you need
- Windows: Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11, 64-bit (x64). The setup refuses older or 32-bit Windows.
- Linux: an x86_64 distribution with glibc 2.34 or later: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Arch Linux and their newer releases, for example. HikariSub runs on X11 and Wayland.
There is no ARM build yet.
Windows
Setup (recommended)
Download HikariSub-<version>-windows-x64-setup.exe and run it. Windows may warn that the publisher is unknown, because the setup is not signed.
- Install for: choose Just me to install in your user folder (
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\HikariSub), with no administrator rights, or All users to install in Program Files for everyone on the computer. All users asks for administrator approval once. - Components: Associate subtitle files (.ass, .ssa, .srt, .sub) is on by default, and Desktop shortcut is off. HikariSub becomes the default app only for file types no other app has claimed.
- Choose the folder, install, and tick Start HikariSub on the last page if you want it to start straight away.
The setup adds HikariSub to the Start menu. If HikariSub is already installed, the setup updates it where it is. Close HikariSub first; the setup waits until it is closed.
To switch between Just me and All users, uninstall first. To install an older version over a newer one, the setup asks you to confirm.
Silent install
The setup accepts these switches:
| Switch | Effect |
|---|---|
/S | Install without showing any window. |
/CURRENTUSER, /ALLUSERS | Just me or All users. |
/COMPONENTS=assoc,desktop | The components to install. The default is assoc. |
/D=<folder> | The install folder. It must come last. |
Exit codes: 0 done, 1 cancelled, 2 failed, 3 HikariSub was running, 4 administrator approval refused or needed, 5 a newer version is installed, 6 installed for the other scope.
Portable zip
Download HikariSub-<version>-windows-x64.zip, unpack it anywhere and run HikariSub_x64\HikariSub.exe. Nothing is installed and no administrator rights are needed.
A portable copy keeps your settings, scripts and autosaves in a user folder inside its own folder: see The user folder. To move to a new version, copy that folder into the new copy. A portable copy does not update itself: when there is a new version, it opens the download page.
Starting HikariSub
From 0.1.0-beta.3, a splash appears on Windows about a second after you start HikariSub, so you can see it's on its way. It follows your HikariSub theme, or Windows' light or dark mode before HikariSub has saved one. The Light and Dark themes show the "Hikari sunrise" artwork with the version under the name, and the other themes show the icon and the name. The splash closes once the main window has drawn, or when you minimise HikariSub.
Linux
AppImage
Download HikariSub-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage, make it executable and run it:
chmod +x HikariSub-*-linux-x86_64.AppImage
./HikariSub-*-linux-x86_64.AppImageIf it does not start because FUSE is missing, run it with APPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN=1 in front of the command.
The AppImage brings its own Qt and the libraries a desktop may lack. Graphics drivers, audio, fonts and glibc come from your system. HikariSub does not add the AppImage to your applications menu or register its file types itself, .hksession sessions among them; a tool such as Gear Lever or AppImageLauncher can. The AppImage updates itself (see Updates), so keep it in a folder you can write to.
Debian and Ubuntu (.deb)
sudo apt install ./hikarisub-<version>-linux-amd64.debFedora and openSUSE (.rpm)
sudo dnf install ./hikarisub-<version>-linux-x86_64.rpm
sudo zypper install ./hikarisub-<version>-linux-x86_64.rpmThe packages are not GPG-signed. If dnf refuses the file for that reason, add --nogpgcheck. zypper needs --allow-unsigned-rpm.
The deb and rpm install HikariSub in /opt/hikarisub, with the command hikarisub, a menu entry, icons and file types for .ass, .ssa, .srt and .sub, and for .hksession sessions.
Portable tar.gz
Download hikarisub-<version>-linux-x86_64.tar.gz, unpack it and run hikarisub-linux-x86_64/hikarisub. It uses the libraries of your system, as the deb and rpm do.
To add it to your applications menu, with its icons and file types, .hksession sessions among them, run the script beside it. It writes only to ~/.local/share and needs no root:
./install-desktop-integration.shThe menu entry points at this folder, so run the script again if you move the folder. ./install-desktop-integration.sh --uninstall removes the entry again.
Updates
HikariSub can check GitHub for a new version once a day when it starts. The check is off until you turn it on: File › Settings › Updates and privacy › Check for updates automatically, or the Updates and privacy step of the Getting started window. You can check at any time with Help › Check for updates.
- Stable versions only is on by default. Turn it off to be offered betas too. A beta build is always offered newer betas.
- Install updates automatically (on by default) downloads an update in the background and installs it when you quit HikariSub. When an update is ready, a bar offers Restart now or Later.
How the update is installed depends on the package:
| Package | Updates |
|---|---|
| Setup | Downloads and installs itself. An All users install asks for administrator approval. |
| AppImage | Replaces the AppImage file with the new one. If the new version does not start, the old one is put back. |
| deb, rpm | Downloads the package and asks for your password to install it. |
| Portable zip, tar.gz | Opens the download page. |
Each download is checked against its SHA-256 before it is installed. To see which version and package you have, open Help › About.
The same Settings page, Updates and privacy, holds Send anonymous usage data, which is on by default. See What is sent.
Uninstall
- Setup: remove HikariSub in Windows Settings › Apps, or run
Uninstall HikariSub.exein the install folder. - AppImage, portable zip, tar.gz: delete the file or folder. Deleting a portable copy's folder deletes its
userfolder too. For the tar.gz, run./install-desktop-integration.sh --uninstallfirst if you used it. - deb, rpm:
sudo apt remove hikarisub, sudo dnf remove hikarisuborsudo zypper remove hikarisub.
Uninstalling keeps your settings, autosaves and scripts, in your user folder. To remove those too, delete it, and the cache folder beside it:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\HikariSuband%LOCALAPPDATA%\HikariSub\cache - Linux:
~/.config/hikarisuband~/.cache/hikarisub
Coming from 0.0.x
An installed HikariSub 0.1 replaces an installed 0.0.x: they share the install folder and package names. Your 0.0.x settings are kept apart and are not changed. See Moving from legacy.
