Troubleshooting

Read the Log, get your work back after a crash, find HikariSub's folders, and fix common problems.

When something goes wrong, HikariSub tells you in a notice at the bottom right of the window, and keeps every notice in the Log. This page covers the Log, what to do after a crash, where HikariSub keeps its files, and the fixes for common problems.

Notices

A notice of each kind behaves a little differently:

  • Information fades after 5 seconds. Holding the pointer over it keeps it.
  • Warnings and Errors stay until you close them with their ×.

At most three show at once. A fourth makes the oldest information notice go. If the three showing are warnings or errors, the oldest folds into a line such as "1 more notice", which opens the Log. A notice with more to say has a Details button, which opens the Log at that entry.

To stop notices popping up, turn off File › Settings › General › Notices › Show notices as toasts. They then go to the Log only.

The Log panel

The Log lists every notice since HikariSub started, oldest first. Each entry shows its time, its kind, the command that gave it and its text, with any details below.

The Log never opens by itself. To open it:

  • View › Log, which shows or hides it. It has no key.
  • View › Panels › Log › Show, where you can also float or dock it.
  • Details on a notice, which opens the Log at that entry and marks it. In full screen, it leaves full screen first.

The first time, it opens at the bottom of the window. Above the entries:

ControlDoes
Information, Warnings, ErrorsShow or hide entries of that kind. Each shows how many there are
FilterShows only the entries containing the text you type. Esc clears it
CopyCopies the entries shown

Ctrl+C copies the selected entry. F1 in the Log opens this page.

There is no log file: the Log panel starts empty each time HikariSub starts. Copy what you need before you quit. Only for a crash report, HikariSub keeps the Log's last 200 lines, with file names, text and folders replaced, in its cache folder.

Automation scripts write their output to the Automation panel's Runs view, not to the Log. A script that fails to load is reported in the Log.

After a crash

HikariSub notices when it was not closed properly. At the next start, the Home page shows HikariSub did not close properly, with the documents the last session had and how many have autosaved work. If you started HikariSub with files, the same offer is a bar under the tabs. It doesn't stop you working: you can answer it later or not at all.

  • Restore session opens the documents of the last session again.
  • Autosaves… opens the Autosaves window, when there is autosaved work.
  • × dismisses the offer.

After a crash, or after HikariSub was closed while frozen, the next start also opens a report window over the Home page, with the same offer under Your work. Apart from the bare record that usage data sends, the report goes only if you send it, take it to GitHub or turn on Always send crash reports: see Crash and freeze reports. The record and the report wait in the cache folder, listed below. HikariSub writes no crash dumps.

Autosaves

A changed document is autosaved 20 seconds after its first change since the last autosave. Read-only documents are not autosaved. File › Settings › General › Saving › Autosave files kept sets how many autosaves each document keeps, 3 at first.

File › Open auto save opens the Autosaves window. File › Remove temporary files opens the same window, with Delete older than… already open.

In the windowDoes
Search autosavesFinds autosaves by document name and folder
SavedShows those saved Today, in the Last 7 days, the Last 30 days, or Before a date
Open copyOpens the autosave as a new, unsaved copy and closes the window. The original file is not changed
DeleteDeletes that autosave
Delete older than…Deletes every autosave saved before a date: A week ago, A month ago or Everything

The work of a HikariSub that is still running is never deleted. Autosaves from HikariSub 0.0.x are marked Read only: you can open them but not delete them.

Files and formats has more on autosaves and sessions.

  • A portable copy keeps its user folder inside its own folder, as user. Its index files and audio cache go to the cache folder above.
  • Uninstalling or updating HikariSub never deletes your user folder. Install says how to remove it.
  • HikariSub writes no log file and no crash dumps. crash-record.txt and hang-record.txt are the short records of a crash or a freeze, read at the next start. The reports folder holds a report waiting for you (crash-report.json), the Log's last 200 lines with names replaced (log-tail.txt), and the screenshot and .zip of Report an issue until you close it.

Settings explains the settings files, and how to reset settings from the Settings window.

Common problems

ProblemWhat to do
A notice disappeared before you read itOpen View › Log
Spelling isn't checked, and a Spellchecker notice says no dictionary files were foundPut the language's .dic and .aff files in the dictionaries folder of the user folder. The notice names the folder
A Grammar check notice says "The grammar checker (harper-ls) stopped"The next check starts it again. See Grammar
A script shows Stopped in the Automation panel, and its macros do nothingPress its Reload button. The script starts again; the macro is not rerun
A macro doesn't finishPress Cancel on its card. If it hasn't stopped after 3 seconds, Force stop appears: it ends the script and changes nothing
Work lost in a crashRestore session or Autosaves… on the Home page, or File › Open auto save
An error notice says "Save failed; the file on disk is unchanged"Another program may have the file open. Close it, or wait a moment, and save again. See Saving
A notice says your output device "is not connected"Audio now plays through the system default. Plug the device back in and HikariSub goes back to it. See Output device
A bar says the file "was changed by another program"Reload reads the file again and drops your changes to it, Compare compares it with yours, and Keep mine keeps your version

If none of this helps, report the problem.
